Païens : this New Brunswick collective is making
waves as one of the most creative and accomplished jazz outfits
in Atlantic Canada. Their showcase at this year's East Coast Music
Awards started a buzz that hasn't stopped. The richness of their
musical and instrumental passions place them in a unique category
in the region. It's a distinctive sound that can't be pigeonholed
into one genre, gliding between the sweetness of jazz across to
the forceful edge of rock

| The
Fussy Part
is an experiment; a collaboration
between five musicians working in the Maritimes with various groups
(Grand Theft Bus & All of Green). A combination of organic and
synthetic sounds is the basis of this group. Sometimes our music
is slow, melodic and ethereal, other times it is loud, abrasive
and heavy; sometimes our music will be all of these things at once.
“Their music is unlike anything I’ve heard from our
local music scene. It’s a spectacular mix of slow melodies
and haunting guitar lines interspersed with loud rockouts, the occasional
techno beat, and odd computer-speak” – Mike Nason, The
Brunswickan
“…ambient, well-layered, expertly arranged songs like
Rita's Tearoom (good, though not my favourite -- just the only song
title they mentioned that I could hear) made The Fussy Part a standout
for me. The second song we heard them play (a brief foray for some
BBQ chicken pizza just below Stage Nine resulted in our missing
a song or two, regrettably) smacked of the influence of post-rock
bands like Godspeed You! Black Emperor (minus about eight other
musicians...) and Explosions In The Sky” – The Rabid
Bulldog

The
Sleepless Nights were formed in the spring of 2004. They
have released a full length cd as well as a split 7 inch single (with
label mate Thomas/Richard). They are currently recording their second
full length album scheduled for release before summer 2006. Tours
are in the works for June and continuing thru the summer seeing the
band perform throughout the Maritimes, Quebec, and Ontario. The music
of The Sleepless Nights is characterized by their use of rhythms borrowed
from various genres and their mogwai-esque quiet/loud dynamic. Like
the animals on Noah’s ark, instrumentation is two by two in
The Sleepless Nights; two drummers, two bass players, and two keyboardists.
The only instrument not doubled is the guitar and we all know the
last thing the music world needs is another guitarist |

Heethcliff:
In the humid basement of the O&M Denture Clinic, where no sound
is heard, even at 3am, three good friends who are Heethcliff meet
up (the band: Pierre Hebert-Guitar, Leo Paul Melanson-Bass, Andre
"MOOSE" Arsenault-Drums) .
If there would be one singular description for Heethcliff, it would
have to go a little something like this. Imagine taking all of Heethcliff’s
favorite bands (Rush, Primus, Mahavishnu, King Crimson, etc.), putting
them in a burlap sack, then spinning the bag around and then let
them out. After all this spinning they would get sick and throw
up, the sound they make while puking is exactly what they sound
like.
